The Basics of Breast Augmentation What, Why, and How

breast augmentation

Breast augmentation surgery enhances the size and shape of breasts by the placement of breast implants. Breast implants are usually filled with either saline or silicone materials. A plastic surgeon can place implants either under or over the pectoral muscle, depending on the desired outcomes of the patient.

Breast augmentation is best suited for patients with naturally small breasts who want to enhance their size and shape. In some cases, breast augmentation can be combined with a breast lift to address sagging breasts. Some patients utilize breast augmentation to restore breast tissue, although other forms of reconstructive plastic surgery may be more appropriate.

Consultation

During a breast augmentation consultation with Dr. Kopchinski at our San Antonio, TX, plastic surgery office, he will examine your breasts and ask about your cosmetic goals to determine the most appropriate technique and type of implant for you. At the end of your consultation, your surgery can be scheduled.
Number 1

Anesthesia

Our procedures are performed at CHRISTUS® Santa Rosa Hospital and Cumberland Surgical Hospital, a state-of-the-art facility. To begin your breast augmentation surgery, we will first administer general anesthesia to ensure your comfort.
Number 2

Incisions

Your plastic surgeon will begin the procedure by making incisions in the breast tissue. When possible, Dr. Kopchinski uses an inframammary incision which is made in the crease of the breast. This can help minimize visible scarring.
Number 3

Implant Placement

Dr. Kopchinski will insert your preferred form of breast implants through the incisions. Depending on your goals and body type, the implants can go under or over the pectoral muscle.
Number 4

Closing the Incisions

After placing the breast implants, the plastic surgeon will suture the incisions shut. The surgery is now complete.
Number 5

Aftercare

To ensure your breasts heal properly, they will be wrapped in special bandages. We may provide you with a special support bra that you will need to wear for at least a few days. You can now begin the process of recovery and enjoy your larger, fuller, more symmetrical breasts.
Number 6

How Long
Do the Results Last?

/

The results of a properly performed breast augmentation are immediate and long-lasting, but you should keep in mind that implants will have to be replaced every 10-20 years. However, this cosmetic investment can provide a lifetime of change when performed by an award-winning board-certified surgeon like Dr. Kopchinski.

Which Type of Implant Should I Choose?

All breast implants consist of a safe silicone shell, but there are two types of materials used to fill the implants. Dr. Kopchinski offers both forms of implants to his patients: breast implants filled with saline, and breast implants filled with silicone. During your consultation at our San Antonio, TX, office, Dr. Kopchinski will explain both options so you can make an informed decision on which type of breast implant will be best.

Breast implant in gloved hands

Saline Implants

Saline implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution. In the rare case that the breast implant should leak or break, the material within it can be naturally absorbed by the body with no negative side effects. This type of implant is also more affordable. The biggest drawback to breast implants filled with saline is that they tend to look and feel less natural than breast implants filled with silicone.

Breast implant in gloved hands

Silicone Implants

Silicone implants are filled with silicone gel and many women believe they replicate the look and feel of natural breast tissue better than saline-filled implants. We also offer the popular "Gummy Bear" breast implant, which features a thicker silicone gel. The disadvantages of silicone-filled implants are that they tend to be more costly than saline implants and require a larger incision.

Displeased With Your Current Implants? Dr. Kopchinski Offers Breast Revision Surgery

Common reasons women choose breast revision surgery include poor performance by an initial surgeon or dissatisfaction with the size of their implants.

Dr. Kopchinski can remove and replace unsatisfactory implants to provide you with an augmentation that meets or exceeds your expectations.

Understanding the Risks of Breast Augmentation

No surgery is without risk. While choosing an experienced plastic surgeon like Dr. Kopchinski at Prestige Cosmetic Surgery in San Antonio, TX, greatly reduces the risks of breast augmentation, some possible complications include:

Capsular Contracture

Capsular contracture describes the effect that occurs when scar tissue contracts around the breast implant. In severe cases, capsular contracture can lead to discomfort and a distorted appearance.

Infection

Any form of surgery runs the risk of infection. Prestige Cosmetic Surgery operates out of a state-of-the-art surgical center that meets the highest cleanliness standards, so chances of infection are low.

Implant Rupture

There is the possibility that the breast implants will eventually rupture. When this happens, the breast can sometimes appear deflated. Dr. Kopchinski can correct this issue with breast implant revision surgery.

Have Sagging Breasts? Consider a Breast Lift

If you are unhappy with your breasts because they have a sagging appearance, a breast lift is a more appropriate choice than breast augmentation. Dr. Kopchinski also performs breast lift procedures at our San Antonio office.

Tailoring Breast Surgery to Your Needs

At our San Antonio plastic surgery office, we take time to discuss your cosmetic goals. This conversation is essential to achieving the outcomes you want from breast augmentation surgery. Dr. Kopchinski wants you to feel heard, and to know that you are in control of your decisions during every step of the surgical process. Whether you just want breast implants or you want to combine your procedure with a breast lift like this patient, we are here to help you achieve your goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do scars go away after breast augmentation surgery?

Breast augmentation scars will not disappear completely, but with proper care, they will fade significantly over time. Dr. Kopchinski favors the inframammary surgical technique, which involves an incision along the lateral crease where the bottom of the breast meets the chest. Due to their location, inframammary scars are easily concealed by many tops, undergarments, and bathing suits.

What is the fastest way to recover from breast augmentation?

Everyone heals at a different rate. However, the surest and safest way to achieve a timely recovery is to follow your doctor's orders and get plenty of rest in the weeks after breast augmentation surgery. Patients should take time off from work and avoid strenuous activities. While walking a little each day is important for preventing blood clots, strenuous exercise should be avoided until you are cleared by your doctor.

Can I do chest exercises after getting breast implants?

Once you are cleared by your surgeon, you can resume doing chest exercises. However, you should start light and gradually increase weight and intensity when doing push-ups, bench presses, and other chest workouts. This is especially true if your breast implants were placed under the pectoral muscles. Discontinue the chest exercise as soon as you notice discomfort and consult with our team for more information.

Do breast implants affect nursing or milk supply?

In most cases, implants don't compromise nursing, but milk supply could be affected. This is particularly true of any surgeries that involve incisions around the areola. Since Dr. Kopchinski typically performs inframammary surgery, the risk to milk production and breastfeeding is lower.

What awards has Dr. Kopchinski won?

Besides being listed as one of America's Top Surgeons, he is also a Health Grades Recognized Doctor and a multiple winner of the Vitals Patient's Choice Award.

What does board certified mean?

Dr. Kopchinski received specialized education and training after medical school that other plastic surgeons have not. He also had to successfully pass a challenging exam given by a board of esteemed plastic surgeons. He is considered to be at the pinnacle of his profession.
